Scary stuff!

Do you remember being little and loving the delicious possibility of scaring yourself silly with ghost stories? We do. Did you love all those scary movies with oh-so-terrifying themes like birds that threatened whole communities? or aliens that had to be overcome? Or maybe you're a fan of the good old-fashioned fairy tale with all the blood and gore of wolves threatening little girls who only want to visit their grandmothers? Well, we've found something you might just like. There's a new online literary magazine (FREE!) for kids from 9 to 99. It's called Underneath the Juniper Tree. (Have you read the Grimm's fairy tale The Juniper Tree? Holey Smokes! We only read that one recently. It's fairly strong stuff for little minds. Just sayin'.)

We're pretty light-hearted here in the Kingdom but there's some dark stuff lurking beneath the surface. Cheryl is keen to mine that vein of darkness. It should be interesting to see what comes up. Are you brave enough to want to see?

The July issue  of  Underneath the Juniper Tree is available now. Our drawing is on page 51.  Check it out ... if you dare!

  1. Congratulations! Sounds like a fabulous new literary place for the little ones. Aren't we all still little ones deep down in those corners of our heart...

  3. I love that sketch called "Roadkill Café"

funny story Cheryl..........there is a maple syrup farm about an hour from where I live that runs a restaurant every year once the sap starts dripping and shuts down again once the saps stops flowing.

The very first year I went there, I was standing in line, waiting to pay for my meal and I was glancing through the flyers and pamphlets they had on display for local events/artists/etc.

There was one called "Roadkill Café"!!!!

It was a take out menu for the café. I was STUNNED. There were items like "surprise ground meatloaf of the day", "chunks of skunk", "groundhog log", etc...........I showed it to my dad and even asked a few people around the area where it was located because I was new to the area.........at which point they looked at me as if I was crazy! (maybe they'd never heard of it either?)

It was so professional looking that I actually had thought it was a real menu for a real place, and I kept asking myself, "WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD EAT THERE!?!?!?!?"

The joke was on me! It was all fake and was just put there by the owners of the syrup farm to give the people something to talk about when they were waiting in the long line :P
